Past
Man had just discovered agriculture when Nicol came screaming into the world. His people regarded this new discovery with suspicion. They believed that it would led to a disconnection from the spiritual world, and to them the spiritual world was everything. It was the very foundation that the entire universe was built upon. They took great care not the displease the spirits because doing so affected them both in this life and the next. They believed that certain people had a deep connection to the spirits, and had gifts that allowed the spirits to communicate with them. Those with the deepest connections were spirit seers, or shamans. They were regarded as the most vital members of a tribe. They let their tribe know the will of the spirits, and it was believed that without their shaman a tribe would cease to be. It was for these reason that a tribe would go to great secure a shaman within their members from defending the one they had to outright stealing one from another tribe. At most only two shamans existed within the same tribe at once, and the second only came into their power just when the first's death is beyond the horizon.
Nicol's mother had not been a shaman, but she still had been blessed with the gift to communicate with spirits. She was a soothsayer whom for one reason or another did not relish in the gift she was given, and thus she plucked her own eyes out. This greatly angered the spirits whom decided instead of giving her visions of what could be they would show her what will be. Seeing the the unchangeable future broke something within his mother, and by the time Nicol came into the world she was known to be quite unstable. Still, her love for him was clear. No one knew whom his father was. They didn't even know if they had the same father. It wasn't because their father sought to hide his identity. It was just simply the way of Nicol's people. While they did have marriages this did not stop them from enjoying multiple partners. This openness left many within the tribe uncertain about the identity of their fathers, and as a result the men of the tribe regarded the children of any women they slept with as their. One, however, only regarded those born from their mother wombs as their siblings.
Six years after Nicol was born his mother gave birth to his sister. It was clear from the very start that his sister was going to be the next shaman. It was rare for a shaman to came screaming into the world with their powers. They usually gained their powers during a process called the second birth, and they only hoped that their current shaman lived long enough to impart some of her wisdom upon her successor. Such things didn't matter to Nicol. It wasn't that he didn't understand the importance of a shaman, but he like his mother loved his sister with his entire being from the very moment she was born, and that love would have pulse through him just as strongly even if she hadn't been born their shaman. He eagerly took to the role of big brother. He wanted nothing more than to spend the rest of his days watching over both his mother and sister, and perhaps getting married. It was a dream that would cause a sad expression to pass across his mother's face whenever he spoke of it, but try as he might he couldn't get her to divulge the reason way.
The truth, however, always has a way of revealing itself. Another tribe decided they wanted possession of every spirit seer. They believed if they had them all not only could unlock every mystery within the universe, but could also outright control the universe itself. They spread across the land, stealing every shaman they came across and Nicol's sister was one of them. Try as they might, Nicol's tribe was powerless to stop them. Many resigned themselves to the end they knew was coming, but Nicol refused to accept that his sister was gone. He decided that he was gonna rescue his sister, and rallied many within the tribe towards the cause. The mission was successful, but by the time they reached his sister the damage was done. Her time among the enemy had broken something within her. She was nothing more than an empty shell of her former self. Nicol was overwhelmed with a sense of failure--much of it came from the fact he believed there was nothing he could do to fix her.
His mother wearing the same sad expression she had whenever he spoke of his dreams for the future told him that there was a way to heal his sister. It required him to undertake a ritual that would change him into a bloodthirsty creature that the world would later come to know as vampire. She told him that simply becoming this creature would not cure his sister. He had to find all those whom were responsible for his sister condition, and drain them dry. It was only through this act that she would be made whole again. He didn't hesitate to agree to the ritual. He would do anything to save his sister--a fact his mother made clear she knew when he told her. They preformed the ritual, and Nicol fled across the land to take vengeance upon those whom had wronged his sister. He returned to the tribe to find his sister back to her normal self, but she was distraught over what he had done. She demanded that she gave all the blood he had consumed back. She rather be broken than have him sell his soul to the darkness, but he refused. He knew exactly what he was giving up when he did the ritual.
This displeased his sister, and she decided to perform a ritual of her own---one that would save her soul at the cost of his. He knew that he couldn't allow her to go through with it. He did not do what he did just so he could stand idly by and watch her erase herself from existence. He knew only one way to stop her from performing the ritual and that was to make her like him. Without any hesitation he changed her, but unsurprising she was not happy with what he had done. The very next morning she decided to walk out into the sun, and it was then he understood just how dangerous the sun was to him. He found himself overcome with grief. He had failed his sister, but he didn't dwell within it for long. Whether by choice or not was another story, because not long after his sister's death news of others like him began to make their way towards him.
He sought these others, and it became clear that he was not only one with this almost instinctual desire to find others of his kind because all the others did the same. How they came to be differed, but two things remained true: They all transformed at the exact same time and none of them were changed in a manner similar to the way his sister had been. It, also, seemed that aside from rumors of one female that they were all male. Man, at first, welcomed vampires among them, but after only twenty years man's fear became too much and the vampires decided erase knowledge of their existence from their memories. Fragments existed, but only enough to spark the imagination not concrete evidence.
After this, Nicol took to wandering the world, and he made several fledgling along the way. He had no real connection to these fledgling. He only made them to ease his loneliness. That was until he met her--Zyana--the only female vampire whom had not been bitten. He was immediately drawn to her. She was the first person to make him feel alive since his sister's death. In fact, there was something that reminded him of his sister, and his failure towards his sister came flooding back to him. He didn't want to fail someone again--especially not someone whom he knew was more important to him than even his sister. He knew that if other of their kind discovered her existence were more than rumors that they were sought to seize her for their own political game, and many would break her in a similar manner that his sister had been in their attempt to use her.
He concluded that the best way to protect her was to lock her up. A decision he would come to realize was a grave mistake. One because it cause her to resent him absolutely. Second, he saw that he was breaking her exactly as his sister had been broken. It was probably this knowledge alone that allowed him to make the decision to release her. Nicol didn't stop being involved with her life--much to Zyana's annoyance--once he let her go. He checks up on her from time to time just to make sure she is well. He took to wandering the world and making fledgling yet again. However, unlike before it was not done out of loneliness. There were something about these fledglings that drew him---a certain spark he wished to preserve.
Present
Time marched on and the world changed with it. Civilization rose and fell, and new ones took their place. Nicol and the others whom had been transformed when he had kept to the shadows even among their own kind. The watched as the younger of their kind formed an government of sorts. They decided laws that all vampire kind must obey and the punishment for breaking these laws. Well, all aside from the ancients--that what those whom had been changed when Nicol had been has become known as. It isn't necessarily out of respect, but because their methods of punishment does not work on ancients. They no longer share the limitation of the newly transformed. For example, the sun is no longer deadly to them. There are many among the younger vampires whom believe ancients are nothing more than myth and stories told by the older ones to keep them in line. Perhaps, even the older ones share this sentiment, at least those whom hadn't been changed by an ancient or their direct fledglings.
Eventually, they decided to make themselves known to man. It was time, they concluded to come out of the closet and seize their rightful place within the world. Nicol believes they are making a grave mistake. He doesn't think man will ever be ready to live openly among vampires, but he says nothing. He believes that time will reveal the truth, and he is somewhat curious to see how long this so called Great Revolution will last.
